October 15 FACTS about Poker and Life or.... Living on my Edge Part IHello Pokerfriends, Every day the same procedure... I start my day with a cup of coffee and a look at the forums where i´m engaged in. Reading and answering a few blogs of friends, checking my mails and answering questions and writing a few comments. Every morning I recognize a lot of questions about played hands, requests on advise, whining threads about so called bad beats, cracked aces decorated with minimum 10 exclamation marks and blogs about how to make money with poker or should i become a pro and can i win the wsop because i´m the best player in the world. I´m tired and I´m bored.
Two days ago I read a blog by Tc. http://www.railbirds.com/blog/205516/understanding-why.html It is no secret... I love his blogs, because there is a lot of true poker wisdom he shares and mostly I agree with him. This blog inspired me to write down what i think about this and i will do this as a series of blogs. All those Questions, blogs, threads and comments have something in common. it is the question about "why does all the others win and i lose all the time!?", "why didn´t i win enough!?" or "how can i win more!?"... To find the answers to this questions we should have a look at the basement of succesfull poker. it makes no sense to discuss progressiv strategies if you are not able to follow basic rules. do you believe some painting is enough for making a new car out of your old and rusty one?
For becoming a better poker player you have to understand and follow the basics of the game. you have to recognize what is your part in this business and how you interact in this game. this and a self critique analysis of your play and behavior at the table is the only way to become a better player. if you feel sick and you have headache you can take an aspirin. if you feel this way every day you should go to a doctor and make sure to know what makes you ill for possible becoming really well... in poker it is the same. if you tell me all the day your aces are cracked i can tell you that you have to raise more preflop, but this is only the aspirin. the better way will be to find out what´s basically wrong with you and your game.
So let us first think about what poker basically is and why we play poker! two questions which sounds very easy... but there are various answers to this question and also many opinions. so it seems like those two questions aren´t as easy as we may first thought. First of all poker is a card game and of course we want to have fun and it preferably should be profitable. if we only have a short look at surface this sounds good. In my opinion this isn´t everything. So what´s the matter for all those whining threads in forums, what´s the reason why so many people aren´t able to lose, why did they go on tilt, why did they use abusive language in chat or simply have problems to learn how to improve their game? For me it is obvious, that this is not even a technical question of strategy. For me this is basically a question about psychology and i don´t mean mental strength only and if you are able to make a tough bluff. I mean that you have to be objective and honest to yourselve´. You have to ask yourselve if you are strong enough to face everything what´s going on at the tables. Part of this is for example your pesonal view on yourselve and also your personal goals at poker. Mostly it helps to face the basic facts of a situation for a better understanding. So, let´s face it! What is poker basically about. In poker i´m not interested in your friendship, your storys, your wife (ok this is a good news), your daughter ( may be good too...), your dog or anything you may want to share. I´m only interested in your money and nothing else! this is everything which counts to me. I want to get your money! basta! If this sounds rude and egoistic in a bad way to you, you should stop playing online poker. you think this isn´t nice to say? this isn´t gently? you are right! Poker isn´t nice and gently. Poker isn´t played against the house or an abstract machine. Also you can´t play poker with each other. Poker is played face to face. you can sing, discuss, chat with each other, but poker is played against each other. this means if i want to win, someone has to lose. the other way round it is the same and that is what makes poker personal... poker is all about competition and all the players are competing against each other. there are players out there which have nothing else in mind than to learn about your game and to force you making a mistake. in poker you can lose much more than your money, your house or your ferrari... Keep this in mind every time you are going to sit down at a table. The first and most important thing we have to do is keeping control about our emotions to make rational desions. If our emotions ar running out of control we are no longer able to make rational decisions in any way and we wil lose money. Losing self control is losing money! If I recognize a chance to make you losing your self control i will try to exploit it. Poker is played against each other... I don´t care about your interest or your personality. i only care about how to get your money.
ok. some of you are now may be think jimmy is rude or it is demeaming to talk in this way about the authors of those whinig threads, may be you think "this is not what poker is for me and i don´t like this behavior. i only play poker for fun and i will never act this way!" ... of course poker should make fun and for me it is even funnier to earn some bucks than to lose them and please don´t try to tell me that there is anyone out there to which it makes fun to leave a table as a losing player. For people which are not involved in poker this may sounds like drama, but for every winning player it is the basic truth about the game. are those people dishonorable? is it disrespectful against others to be a shark in poker?
Idon´t think so. For me poker and also being a shark is absolutely honorable. Most winning player are honest people, especially honest to themselve. Players which close their eyes about their mistakes and only start whining about those bad beats will never become winning players, because they are not honest to themselve and so they never will learn about their weakness and their strength. And this means they never will really improve their game. It is a fact that poker can sharpen your view on life. Also it is a fact that poker can bring out the best of you as well as the most negative things. And there are some really good reasons why there are laws against poker as well as laws prohibiting gambling for underaged. i don´t want to start a discussion now about laws and law enforcement. I only want you to keep in mind that responsible gambling and gaming means first to be responsible for yourselve. when i was 19 i went to the army. i was an esign in german special forces and some of the things i learnd was to take care about yourselve first and that this is a key fro beieng responsible to others. if you are not able to control your emotions you will find yourselve in trouble. ok. trouble for a soldier in the special forces has an other meaning as for a poker player player and also trouble for a soldier means that your comrades will be also in troubel because of your mistakes, but basically it is the same. you need the ability to make rational decisions. you think this is some kind of egoism? yes it is. you think this is negative? no, it isn´t. A poker player which doesn´t act in an egoistic way is bringing the game to an absurd level or basically, he is no poker player. For me it is not negativ or socially unacceptable at all to be eogistic. It could be, yes, but basically i´t isn´t. It is par of each of us. it is part of our nature, our roots. We should keep this in mind. For many people it is not nice and also many think it is not gently, even for some it is an religious problem. For me it is a question of surviving. For example... Have a look at the elections in the united states. the world is in the biggest financial trouble since 1923. one collapse of financial institues follows another. people lose their houses, their jobs and they are afraid of the future and what will happens next. who do you want to lead the biggest economy in the world? do you want a nice and gently guy which wants to be everybodys darling or do you want an egoistic leader which will make tough and rational decisions without caring what the rest of the world thinks, doing what has to be done for becoming a winner? i prefer the second one. just my opinion. unfortunately in my opinion wether obama or mc caine is such a leader but i don´t want to discuss about politics. i only wanted to give you an example. Poker is a mirror of life and the way we handle our life often is the way we play poker. I´m convinced about the fact and also it is my experience that most winning players in poker are also winners in life. Poker is a mirror of life and it brings out the truth of us and it leaves us alone with that truth. This is the biggest problem of most losing players... You are alone at the table. You are alon with yourselve and the situation. There is no Joker, no mother you can ask . you are face to face with the situation and your opponent... self control, making rational decisions is the first key to succesfull poker. to be continued... wish you best of luck on and off the felts August 18 Early Bird #3Hello Pokerfriends, Poker becomes more and more popular each day. It is absolutely astonishing and sometimes even scary how "green" are some of the newbies. It´s amazing how many of them become broken, how less much people know about Bankrollmanagement, about Payoutstructures, about Rake, the whole thing about internet gambling works and how the gambling industry makes money. And all those people throw away their coins. A few days later, sometimes it tooks only a few hours or minutes, they are broke. In total ignorance and only the chance to win in mind they make a new deposit. the same thing happens again. most of them do this 3 to 4 times before they stop for a second to think about what they are doing. But making profit with Poker isn´t impossible. It is one of the easiest things in the world. For sure, most people will never become rich or famous by playing poker, but it´s truly in range make a few bucks, even a few more. The only thing a smart poker player needs is a chip and a chair! Keep this in mind. It´s true. We all know Phil Ivey, Daniel Negreanu, Doyle Brunson and all the other famous players. Are they Gods? NO. They are human beeings just like you and me. They also were newbies and they also had to learn the game. So why did they grow famous? Because they are smart. They don´t put money on worst chances. They know that they have to work hard for their edge. They know about the rules of this business and they follow this rules. Poker is a deal! As a poker player u deal with odds. But there is a lot more! I will give u short example. Most of u know and play on PokerStars. Two of the most popular games on PokerStars are the 10cent SNG and the $1 Single Table SNG. Lean back and think for a while you are a professional business man and you have to make an analysis of this two games, making a decision on what you will put your money. The amount you want to invest is $25. Your goal is to double your invest as fast as possible and of course with as less risk as possible. PokerStars Single Table SnG $1+$0.20 · 30 Games played with 30% finished ITM (3x$4.50)-(10x$1.20)= $1.50 (finishes first place) (3x$2.70)-(10x$1.20)= -$3,90 (finishes second place) (3x$1.80)-(10x$1.20)= -$6.60 (finishes third place) Total -$9.00 Going ITM needs at least a chipcount of >t3500. For that you have to play an average of 80 hands which tooks about 45minutes. winning tooks about 1h min and additional 50 hands. so this tourney will need an average time of nearly 40 minutes. Total Invest $36 PokerStars Multi Table SnG $0.10 · 30 Games played with 30% finished ITM (3x$3.10)-(10x$0.10)= $8.10 (finish 1-9 avg. prize $3.10) (3x$0.38)-(10x$0.10)= $0.14 (finish 10-20avg. prize $0.38) (3x$0.24)-(10x$0.10)= -$0.28 (finish21-36 avg. prize $0.24) Total $7.68 Going ITM needs at least a chipcount of >t6000. For that you have to play an average of 90 hands which tooks about 1hour. winning tooks about 1h 40min and additional 60 hands. so this tourney will need an average time of nearly 50 minutes. Avg. ROI 256% Total Invest $3 This short Business Case show you the Impact of Rake combined with the Payout Structure of a Single Table Tournament. Of course an experienced, well schooled and trained player is able to make those $1 tournaments profit, but it is hard work, it is combined with a high risk and it tooks a lot of time. So a smart business man normally will chose the easier way. He will take care of his bankroll. He will have a look at the conditions of the deal. He will make rational decisions. The first steps into business are normally the ones which are the hardest to do. in poker it is the same. the first levels will be the hardest. Ok, that´s it on strategy for this one. next week I will write a few lines about bankrollmanagement and why it i so important. Also a have some very intersting handhistories I want to discuss during next week. Last thing for me now is to post results of last week. results of the week for FTP MTT RB-Freeroll 64/1017 $0.21 results of the week for Stars MTT buyin 50FPP 348/2752 $1.60 total $59,94 wish you best off luck on and off the felts
Early Bird #2Jul 27, 2008 Sunday - Aug 3, 2008 Sunday BR $22,30 ok last week I started with the "Early Bird" blogs. here is #2. this week I tried to push my BR. as I told you in #1 I have a sidebet running with "Brangusis". This will be a very close race. more later. I was thinking about how I could push my BR without taking to much risk. most of you will know that playing SNGs is very swingy and 10 buyins up or down is quiet normal and no swing. So I thought about what I could do with my BR and my FPPs. normally MTTs and SNGs on stars use the 20% payout structure as shown below.
as you easily could see you have to reach the finaltable to get the real money and only the last 3 will get a real big payout. so MTT´s are a good way for bankrollbuilding if you go deep and you continiously reach ITM. with a ROI of 300% on micros I surely meet this conditions but I´m searching for the blast! so I decided to have a look at the satellites. small SNGs 36 players and a large payout will be prefered. because of my BR, at the moment only the satellites for SHG will be interesting.
the payouts are the same for the first and for the last player ITM. so I decides to play this tourneys. I will start with 70/210FPP satellites and the $2,20 SNGs for 6 tickets. I want to play a series of 100 satellites to push my BR. this should give me enough money for the next level up as well as trying to become silverstar next month. Hopefully this also pushes my BR enough to beat Brangusis. about Brangusis and our sidebet... bad news for me. he played a qualifier for the turbo takedown on stars. he easily won this. it was the 10FPP 500 players for one ticket. I railed him and he played very well.I never saw him as good as yesterday. with this ticket our sidebet for august will become interesting. takedown is on 31st and each third player will be paid. if he can keep up his performance I´m sure he is able to go deep. also I didn´t played enough tourneys last week. I have to do more... but never the less, here are my results for the last week and they looks not even bad. stars, $1,20 SNG 1/9 $4,50 BR $ 76,45 I believe I can say now that I did the level up. every time I do this on my challenge, I will change my avatar to a new level ... goals for this week are making $100 on stars, earning 131FPP, playing 25 satellites, find a way to push my BR on FTP. so any comments and ideas are welcome! wish u best of luck on and off the felts July 28 Early Bird #1
Most of u may know me as a designer of custom tables. some may know me for commenting on blogs and boards and some of u may know me for making jokes. But what about the Pokerplayer!? May be u recognized that I joined the Big Stacks two days ago. I´m very proud of beeing a Big Stack and the first thing I did was putting the banners on my board as well as on my blog on livespace.
Dragon wrote a blog announcing me as a new member to all Railbirds and especially to the clan. It was a pleasure to read all those comments on this blog and the kind words. But there are two comments I was astonished about... Don´t worry, it wasn´t in a negativ way the first one was written by minneslim: wow. I was recognized as a pokerplayer by a completely stranger! the second comment I was astonished about was written by saffyremist: wow. totally opposite. was recognized as a designer but she didn´t know anything about my pokerskills. I was thinking about this and the result is that I think it´s time to put focus on poker. I have already a blog on livespace which is only about poker, but it is in german. My english blog actually show only a copy of the custom table gallery. It´s time to change this. From now I will start a blog right here on Railbirds showing u my lifes as a pokerplaying Railbird and of course as a Big Stack and copy it to my blog on livespace. So now u know what the Early Bird will be and why I do this. So let´s get ready to ruuuuuuuuuuuuuumble! I played poker for almost 13 years. Started to play with 5 Card Draw and a little bit later with 7 Card Stud. To play online I started January 2005 on Pacific. I played there for about two years before I quit due to personal reasons. I didn´t play online for more than one year, but I was still playing offline, as a good friend asked me to play with him at Stars. I knew Stars by name, not more and was thinking about it for a while. I reactivated my account on Pacific and played a few days, as I decided to give it a try on Stars. This was in april this year. I made a first deposit of $25 and started to built a bankroll. Joined a Cashgame, was going easily up to $200 in a few hours. was gambling a little bit and asking myself what to do. Played some SNGs and MTTs and was still asking myself. My Goals... I had a look at some communities and I found the page of Chris Ferguson describing his Challenge on FTP. I´m sure you all know it. I decided to give it a try cashed out and started this challenge only a few week s ago in mid of June on Stars as well as on FTP. I´m interested in the differences of the pokersites especially between Stars and FTP. You know some prefer Stars some FTP. Some players told me that FTP is softer than Stars and some told me the opposite. I recognized before that online poker changed in the past year as I wasn´t playing. So what I want to know is, am I able to build up a bankroll again out of nothing, as I did three years ago? Is there really a difference between Stars, FTP and Pacific and is online poker changing so much and fast that ur knowledge will be obsolet for mid- and highstake poker within one or two years? Ok there are two more goals but they are not the main objectives. Want to visit Las vegas and want to play a WSOP-Event. The Beginning I played some Freerolls on Stars and earned some bucks, putting them into the 10cent donkaments 360 Turbo. I´m sure u all know them. It was pretty much fun and I´m still amazed how people all the way talk about bad beats and that the micros are unplayable and the masses of donkeys will beat everyone. I think a good or even a very good pokerplayer has to beat also the micros. Actually I finished this level and even if it was funny I´m happy about going up to next level. For all which are interested here are my stats of the Freeroll and 10cent donkament adventure...
The Future maybe... I believe my biggest problem will be discipline. I already gave 2 SHG Tickets to a broken friend as well as $10. But I sweared to myself not to do this again. Why does always those people come to me with their problemes? I will play Stars and FTP in a weakly change and this week I will be on Stars. I will report about my challenge every week. So there is a lot of work to do, but the beginnig is done and I know I´m a solid player and the actual levels will be no problem. Also I have running a sidebet with a german friend about the battle of planets. this could blast my BR and I will do anything what is possible to win this sidebet. Before starting my Challenge I do a lot of practicing on different levels. So I reached one of my sidegoals already. Had 150 SNG cashes in a single month on Stars. This Goal is already to reach on FTP. Also I want to be, each for one time, Low- and High-Orbit Champion on Stars. I know that this will be difficult, but those side goals I believe will help me reaching the big one even if i didn´t finish them. I already published a blog about online tells and basics about odds and outs, ICM and some hands. I will publish in the future every week a hand or some tactical thoughts about poker I would like to discuss with u. So now you know something about the pokerplayer vvolf69 and I´m looking forward to cu @ the tables. Wish u all best of luck on and off the felts. cu next week with Early Bird #2...
